Leave it to Mike Brown to deliver one of the bigger hits from the Chicago Bears recently. While the slate gets wiped clean following Thursday's preseason finale at Cleveland, Brown made no effort to hide his concern after watching the defense fall flat against San Francisco in a 37-30 loss last week.
The Chicago Bears released cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. on Tuesday. In two seasons with the Bears, he appeared in 31 games with 11 starts. With the Bears, Manning had 106 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions. He signed with the team as a restricted free agent in 2006. Manning entered the league in 2003 as a third-round selection of the Carolina Panthers.
The Chicago Bears terminated the contract of cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. on Tuesday.
Rex Grossman vowed to be ready and expressed no regrets about re-signing with the Chicago Bears, but he also made one thing clear about his new role. "I'll never fully get over it," he said. "And I don't think anyone would expect me to." Although he didn't lash out at coach Lovie Smith for making Kyle Orton the starting quarterback last week, Grossman acknowledged he's having trouble accepting...
Coach Lovie Smith named Kyle Orton his starting quarterback to give Orton a few weeks to prepare for the regular-season opener, and he responded with a strong effort against San Francisco on Thursday. He completed 10 of 17 passes for 147 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He finished with a 126.3 passer rating.
Meanwhile, Grossman turned in his second consecutive lackluster performance, completing 1 of 4 passes for six yards. Granted, Grossman was hampered by poor offensive line play in the second preseason game, but he managed just 74 yards while hitting 9 of 15 passes and finished with a 44.9 passer rating as he failed to lead the offense past midfield in five possessions.

Just when it appeared Luol Deng was ready to play out the coming season and become an unrestricted free agent in 2009, the Bulls finally came to terms with their 6-foot-8 forward on a six-year, $71-million contract.
Deng's attorney, Jason Levien, set July 29 as a deadline to get something done, because Deng was planning to leave the next day for London, where he'll spend the month of September playing for the Great Britain national team in European championship qualifying.
"He is only 23 years old and one of the best young small forwards in the game," general manager John Paxson said. "So we are happy to have the contract done." Deng suffered from back and Achilles' tendon injuries last season, while his numbers dropped a bit from the 18.8 points and 7.1...

Luol Deng could be forced to miss Great Britain's qualifying campaign for the 2009 European Championship because the team can't find an insurer to cover the forward's lucrative new six-year contract with the Chicago Bulls. The national team is exploring solutions to the problem with the NBA and the Bulls, who gave Deng a new deal last month reportedly worth up to $80 million.
The Chicago Bulls officially announced the re-signing of restricted free agent Luol Deng on Thursday, but that...
